Addressing Your Driveway’s Scaling Issues

Scaling is a common problem for concrete driveways, patios, and pool decks. This occurs when moisture gets trapped in the concrete surface, causing it to expand and contract at different rates than the surrounding soil. This can cause the top layer of concrete to flake off or peel away completely. To fix this issue, here are some repair tips that you can use to address scaling issues on your concrete driveway:

Identify the Source of Scaling

To identify the source of the scaling, you first need to examine your driveway. If it’s an older driveway, this could be due to age or weather conditions. If it’s a newer driveway and experiencing scaling, then there may be something else at play. The next thing you’ll want to do is check the type of concrete sealer used on your driveway and make sure that those seals are still intact. This will help determine whether or not water is penetrating into the surface layer of your concrete and causing it to break down over time

Remove Loose and Flaking Scale

To remove loose and flaking scales, you’ll need to use a wire brush. If your driveway is large enough, it’s best to use a pressure washer instead of just spraying water on the surface. The force of the spray will knock off any loose scale. If you don’t have access to one of these tools or if they’re not available at your home improvement store, use a scrubbing sponge or mop instead–but be careful not to damage other surfaces around your home!

Sand Back Down to Bare Concrete

Once you’ve removed the loose and flaking scale, use fine-grit sandpaper to sand back down to bare concrete. If you do not want to remove all of your sealers, it may be easier to use an orbital sander instead of trying to hand sand with a block or file. If there is no sealer on your driveway and you have only been using water-based treatment, then this step should not be necessary as long as there is no loose scaling on top of your driveway surface.
